DIFFERENCE BETWEEN LOK SABH AND RAJYA SABHA

PARLIAMENT :-

Parliament is the highest legislative body of India. The Indian parliament consists of president and two houses namely Lok Sabha and Rajya Sabha. The president has the power to summon the either of the houses and also have power to dissolve the Lok Sabha.

DIFFERENCE BETWEEN LOK SABHA AND RAJYA SABHA :-

The Lok Sabha and Rajya Sabha are the two houses of the parliament. The Lok Sabha is known as lower house and Rajya Sabha is known as upper house. The houses of the parliament differs in terms of their tenure,  power, processes and functions.

* The total tenure of Lok Sabha in India is 5 years. Once this 5 years tenure expires the Lok Sabha dissolves. On the other hand there is no tenure for Rajya Sabha, Rajya Sabha is a permanent house. After every 2 years 1/3 of members of Rajya Sabha retires.

* The Lok Sabha has up to 552 members (present members are 545) . On the other hand Rajya Sabha has up to 250 members ( present members are 245).

* The members of both Lok Sabha and Rajya Sabha called as MP's (Members of Parliament).

* The members of Lok Sabha are elected by the common people who are eligible to vote during general elections while the members of Rajya Sabha are elected indirectly by elected representative of the people in the assemblies of different states and Union territories in the country.( It means members of Rajya Sabha represents your state in national wide).

* The minimum age of eligibility for the members of Lok Sabha is 25 years while it is 30 for Rajya Sabha members.

* The speaker represents the Lok Sabha while the vice-president represents the Rajya Sabha.

* Lok Sabha has power to introduce the budget of the country whereas no such power resides in the hands of Rajya Sabha. Lok Sabha is also called the "controller of the purse of the nation". Rajya Sabha can only discuss it when it is passed by the Lok Sabha.

* Lok Sabha has power to pass various motions such as no confidence motion, censure motion, question hour, zero hour, etc. While the Rajya Sabha doesn't have power to pass such motions it can exercises control on them by means of questions, debates and discussions.

* Money bills can only be introduced in Lok Sabha. After that it is passed to Rajya Sabha for consideration. Rajya Sabha must passes the bill with in 14 days with or without changes. It's up to the Lok Sabha to accept or reject the changes

The parliament is also vested with powers to impeach the president, removal of judges of supreme Court and high courts , the chief election commissioner and comptroller and auditor general in accordance with the procedure laid down in the constitution. 

In conclusion it is clear the Lok Sabha is more powerful than Rajya Sabha in almost all matters. Even in those matters in which the constitution has placed both the houses on equal foot..
